4 “Weird” Symptoms That Can Occur With Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer can be difficult to detect early because it often causes no symptoms at first, and when symptoms appear, they’re frequently nonspecific. Having one of these symptoms does not mean you have pancreatic cancer—many much more common conditions can cause them.
1. 🟡 Yellow skin or eyes
Jaundice can occur when a tumor blocks the bile duct. You may also notice dark urine, pale or greasy stools, and itchy skin.
2. ⚖️ Unexplained weight loss
Losing weight without trying, particularly when accompanied by loss of appetite, can be a warning sign that deserves medical evaluation.
3. 🩸 An unexpected blood clot
Pancreatic cancer can sometimes be associated with blood clots, including deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) in a leg or a pulmonary embolism. However, most blood clots have other causes.
4. 🩸 New or suddenly worsening diabetes
Pancreatic cancer can affect insulin-producing cells and may be associated with new-onset diabetes or unexpectedly worsening blood sugar control. Importantly, most new cases of diabetes are not caused by pancreatic cancer.
Other symptoms to know
Possible symptoms also include upper abdominal or back pain, fatigue, nausea/vomiting, appetite loss, and changes in bowel movements.
🚩 When should you see a doctor?
Don’t panic over an isolated symptom, but persistent or unexplained changes should be evaluated, particularly unexplained weight loss, jaundice, persistent abdominal/back pain, or a new change in blood sugar.
