Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl 🍌

The “10 days longer” claim is possible in some circumstances, but it isn’t a guaranteed result. Banana variety, ripeness, temperature and storage conditions all make a difference. Recent testing found that wrapping the banana stems with aluminum foil was one of the most effective simple methods tested. (Kitchn)

The simple trick: aluminum foil

Bananas naturally produce ethylene, a plant hormone that accelerates ripening. (University of Maryland Extension)

Try this:

  1. Keep the bananas together in their bunch.
  2. Tear off a small piece of aluminum foil.
  3. Wrap it tightly around the exposed stem/crown where the bananas join.
  4. Keep the bunch somewhere cool, dry and away from direct sunlight.
  5. Keep bananas away from other ethylene-producing fruits such as apples and avocados.

In a 2026 test by The Kitchn, foil-wrapped stems performed better than several other storage methods, including plastic wrap. (Kitchn)

What about plastic wrap?

Plastic wrap around the stems can also help slow ripening, although the results aren’t always dramatic. Food Network recommends stem wrapping as one way to buy additional time. (Food Network)

Another useful trick

Once bananas have reached the ripeness you like, refrigerating them can slow further ripening. The peel may turn brown or dark, but the fruit inside can remain usable longer. Don’t refrigerate unripe bananas, because cold temperatures can interfere with normal ripening and cause chilling injury. (Martha Stewart)

Bottom line: If your bananas disappear into the fruit bowl and become brown within days, try wrapping the stem/crown with aluminum foil and storing the bunch separately from other fruit. It can slow ripening, but don’t expect every bunch to remain perfect for exactly 10 extra days. (Kitchn)
