Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

Daily showers aren’t necessarily harmful after 65. The concern is that aging skin generally becomes thinner and drier, so long, hot showers and harsh soaps can remove protective oils and aggravate dryness or itching.

What may help

  • Use lukewarm rather than very hot water.

  • Keep showers relatively short.

  • Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, especially on areas that become sweaty or dirty.

  • Avoid vigorous scrubbing.

  • Apply a moisturizer shortly after bathing, while the skin is still slightly damp.

  • If daily showering feels comfortable and your skin isn’t becoming dry or irritated, there’s generally no need to stop solely because of age.

Very hot showers can also make some people light-headed, which may increase fall risk.

If you have persistent itching, cracking, a rash, or repeated dizziness while showering, it’s worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
