Cardiologist reveals #1 exercise to prevent heart attack

The headline “Cardiologist reveals the #1 exercise to prevent heart attack” is misleading because there isn’t one exercise that can guarantee prevention of a heart attack.

If you want the simplest answer, brisk walking is an excellent choice for many adults because it’s accessible, sustainable, and provides cardiovascular exercise without requiring special equipment.

A heart-protective exercise routine

  • Aerobic exercise: Aim for about 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming.

  • Strength training: Add muscle-strengthening exercise at least 2 days per week.

  • Balance and flexibility: Particularly useful as you get older.

  • Start gradually: If you’ve been inactive, increase duration and intensity progressively rather than jumping into strenuous exercise.

Exercise helps lower cardiovascular risk by improving fitness, blood pressure, blood sugar, weight management, and other risk factors. But preventing heart attacks also involves not smoking, managing cholesterol and blood pressure, eating a heart-healthy diet, sleeping adequately, and taking prescribed medications when appropriate.

⚠️ If you have known heart disease or significant symptoms such as chest pressure, unexplained shortness of breath, fainting, or unusual exercise-related dizziness, talk with a healthcare professional before beginning vigorous exercise.
