Yes—vitamin D deficiency can sometimes contribute to aching bones or muscles, including discomfort in the hips, thighs, and legs. But aching hips or legs doesn’t automatically mean you’re deficient in vitamin D.
Other possible causes
-
Muscle strain or overuse
-
Osteoarthritis or other joint problems
-
Nerve irritation, such as sciatica
-
Poor circulation
-
Vitamin B12 deficiency
-
Certain medications
-
Calcium or other nutritional deficiencies
What to do
If the aching is persistent, widespread, or unexplained, a clinician can assess your symptoms and may order a 25-hydroxyvitamin D blood test if deficiency is suspected. Don’t take high-dose vitamin D supplements without medical advice—excess vitamin D can cause dangerously high calcium levels and kidney problems.
Seek prompt medical attention for sudden severe leg pain or swelling in one leg, a cold/pale leg, inability to walk, or leg pain accompanied by chest pain or shortness of breath.
