The “Best Vitamin” for Heavy Legs and Numb Feet
There isn’t one vitamin that everyone with heavy calves, numbness, tingling, or “dead feet” is missing. Those symptoms can have many causes, and choosing a vitamin without identifying the cause can delay appropriate treatment.
Some nutritional deficiencies can contribute:
-
Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause numbness, tingling, weakness, and balance problems.
-
Folate deficiency can contribute to anemia and fatigue.
-
Vitamin D deficiency can be associated with muscle weakness and aches, although it doesn’t specifically explain every case of numb feet.
-
Iron deficiency can cause fatigue and weakness, but isn’t usually the direct cause of numbness.
Other common causes include diabetes or diabetic nerve damage, circulation problems, nerve compression, certain medications, and problems originating in the lower back.
Don’t automatically take high-dose vitamins
More isn’t necessarily better. In particular, excess vitamin B6 can itself cause peripheral neuropathy, producing numbness and tingling.
If you have persistent numbness, weakness, swelling, pain, or changes in the color or temperature of your feet, it’s better to have the cause evaluated. Sudden numbness or weakness—especially on one side of the body—requires urgent medical attention.
