A Simple Nighttime Routine for Supporting Healthy Vision

A Simple Nighttime Routine for Supporting Healthy Vision

Your eyes work hard throughout the day, so a few simple habits before bedtime can help support comfortable, healthy vision.

1. Give your eyes a screen break

Try to put phones, tablets, and computers away about 30–60 minutes before bed. If you must use a screen, reduce the brightness and avoid holding it very close to your face.

2. Keep your eyes comfortably hydrated

If your eyes often feel dry or irritated in the evening, avoid sitting directly in front of a fan or air conditioner. If you regularly need artificial tears, choose preservative-free drops unless your eye-care professional recommends otherwise.

3. Remove contact lenses

Never sleep in contact lenses unless they are specifically prescribed for overnight wear. Follow the cleaning and replacement schedule recommended for your lenses.

4. Get enough sleep

Adequate, consistent sleep gives your eyes a chance to rest and may reduce symptoms such as tired, dry, or irritated eyes.

5. Avoid rubbing your eyes

If your eyes feel itchy or tired, gently close them or use a clean, cool compress rather than rubbing them.

6. Keep up with eye care

A nighttime routine can support eye comfort, but it cannot prevent or treat every eye condition. Regular comprehensive eye examinations are important, particularly if you have vision changes, diabetes, a family history of eye disease, or other risk factors.

One final tip: If you experience sudden vision loss, a sudden increase in floaters or flashes, severe eye pain, or a curtain-like shadow over your vision, seek urgent medical attention rather than waiting until morning.
