Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

🍌 The Banana Storage Trick That Can Help Them Last Longer

If the “one kitchen item” is plastic wrap, there is some truth behind the tip—but it isn’t a magic way to make bananas last 10 days longer.

Bananas naturally produce ethylene gas, which accelerates ripening. Much of that gas is released around the stem/crown. Wrapping the crown with plastic wrap can reduce gas exchange and may slow ripening somewhat.

Try this

  1. Separate the bananas if you want them to ripen more slowly.
  2. Wrap the top/stem area with a small piece of plastic wrap.
  3. Keep them somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.
  4. Once ripe, refrigerating the bananas can slow further ripening. The peel may turn brown, but the flesh can remain good for longer.

What about the fruit bowl?

A fruit bowl isn’t necessarily bad, but keeping bananas next to other ethylene-producing fruits—such as apples, pears, and avocados—can accelerate ripening.

Also, don’t refrigerate unripe bananas if you want them to ripen normally; cold temperatures can interfere with the ripening process.

Bottom line: Wrapping the banana stems may modestly extend their usable life, but claims that one kitchen item will reliably make bananas last exactly 10 days longer are exaggerated.
