5 Foods Rich in Phytoestrogens

If by “estrogen-rich foods” you mean foods containing phytoestrogens, these are plant compounds that can interact with estrogen receptors. They are not the same as human estrogen, and eating them doesn’t simply raise your body’s estrogen level.

Five good sources are:

  1. Soybeans and soy foods — tofu, tempeh, edamame, and unsweetened soy milk are particularly rich in isoflavones.

  2. Flaxseeds — one of the richest dietary sources of lignans, a type of phytoestrogen.

  3. Sesame seeds — contain lignans and other plant compounds.

  4. Chickpeas and other legumes — provide smaller amounts of various phytoestrogens along with protein and fiber.

  5. Dried fruits — foods such as dried apricots and prunes contain lignans in smaller amounts.

A useful distinction

Phytoestrogens don’t work exactly like estrogen medications. Their effects can vary depending on the type of compound, dose, and an individual’s physiology.

For most people, these foods can be part of a healthy diet. If you’re considering them specifically to increase estrogen, manage menopause symptoms, or affect hormone levels, food alone may not produce a predictable hormonal effect.

If you tell me whether you’re interested in menopause, low estrogen, fertility, or general health, I can tailor the list and explain the evidence.
