Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

The simple kitchen item that can help bananas last up to 10 days longer is aluminum foil (or alternatively, plastic cling wrap).
Instead of tossing your bananas into a crowded fruit bowl, you can drastically extend their shelf life by changing how and where you store them.

Why the Fruit Bowl Accelerates Spoilage

  • The Ethylene Gas Problem: Bananas naturally release high amounts of ethylene gas, a plant hormone that triggers ripening.
  • The Crowding Effect: When bananas are kept in a fruit bowl alongside other ethylene-sensitive produce (like apples, avocados, or other bananas), the trapped gas concentrates and causes the entire batch to rapidly over-ripen, turn brown, and spoil.

How to Use the Foil Hack

  1. Separate or Keep the Bunch Together: Keep your bananas in a cohesive bunch.
  2. Wrap the Stem: Take a small piece of aluminum foil (or plastic wrap) and tightly wrap it around the exposed crown/stem of the banana bunch.
  3. Store on the Counter: Place the bananas out in the open on a kitchen worktop or hang them up, away from other fruits.

Why It Works

The stem is the primary source where ethylene gas escapes from the fruit. By sealing the stem tightly with foil or plastic wrap, you trap the gas from flowing down into the fruit body, effectively slowing down the ripening process and keeping them bright yellow and fresh for up to nearly two weeks longer.
