Your Feet Are a “Blood Sugar Meter” – Beware of Diabetes If You Frequently Experience These 12 Symptoms

If you’re asking whether feet can reveal diabetes, there’s some truth behind the idea, but “your feet are a blood sugar meter” is misleading. Foot symptoms cannot diagnose diabetes or tell you your blood sugar level.

12 foot-related symptoms worth paying attention to

  1. Numbness or reduced sensation in the feet

  2. Tingling or “pins and needles”

  3. Burning or unusual warmth

  4. Sharp, shooting, or electric-like pain

  5. Increased sensitivity to touch

  6. Feeling unusually cold in the feet

  7. Dry, cracked skin

  8. Slow-healing cuts or blisters

  9. Recurrent foot infections

  10. Sores or ulcers that don’t heal

  11. Changes in skin color or temperature

  12. Swelling or unexplained changes in the feet

These symptoms can occur with diabetic nerve damage (neuropathy) or circulation problems, but they can also have many other causes.

If you repeatedly experience these symptoms—especially numbness, a non-healing wound, or a change in skin color—it’s worth getting evaluated and having your blood glucose and HbA1c checked. If a foot becomes suddenly cold, pale/blue, severely painful, or develops a rapidly worsening wound, seek urgent medical attention.
