10 Metoprolol Side Effects That Can Be Overlooked

Metoprolol is a beta-blocker commonly used for high blood pressure, angina, certain heart-rhythm problems, and heart failure. Not everyone experiences side effects, and some symptoms can have causes other than the medication.

  1. Tiredness or unusual fatigue — especially when starting treatment or after a dose increase.

  2. Dizziness or lightheadedness — particularly when standing up quickly.

  3. Slow heartbeat (bradycardia) — metoprolol intentionally lowers heart rate, but an excessively slow pulse can be a problem.

  4. Cold hands and feet — reduced circulation to the extremities can make them feel unusually cold.

  5. Sleep disturbances or vivid dreams — some people notice changes in sleep after starting a beta-blocker.

  6. Depressed mood or low energy — mood changes have been reported, although the relationship with beta-blockers varies between individuals.

  7. Shortness of breath or wheezing — metoprolol can sometimes worsen breathing problems, particularly in susceptible people.

  8. Sexual difficulties — decreased libido or erectile difficulties can occur in some people.

  9. Nausea, diarrhea, or stomach discomfort — gastrointestinal symptoms are possible.

  10. Difficulty recognizing low blood sugar — beta-blockers can mask some warning signs of hypoglycemia, particularly a fast heartbeat.

⚠️ When to contact a doctor urgently

Seek prompt medical attention for fainting, severe dizziness, very slow or irregular heartbeat, significant breathing difficulty/wheezing, swelling of the face or throat, or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

Don’t stop metoprolol suddenly unless a healthcare professional specifically tells you to. Abrupt withdrawal can cause a dangerous increase in heart rate and blood pressure and may worsen angina or other heart problems.
