Why is it so important not to flush the toilet after every trip to the toilet to urinate?

If you’ve heard that you shouldn’t flush after every time you urinate, that advice is usually about saving water, not protecting your health.

  • Flushing uses water: A typical toilet can use several liters of water per flush, so skipping some flushes can reduce household water consumption.

  • There’s no general medical rule saying you must avoid flushing urine. Urine sitting in a toilet can produce odor and may contribute to an unhygienic bathroom environment.

  • “If it’s yellow, let it mellow” is an informal water-conservation saying. It generally means you can occasionally avoid flushing after urination if the toilet is clean and you’re comfortable with it.

  • You should flush after bowel movements, and more frequent flushing is sensible if multiple people share the bathroom, there is noticeable odor, or someone in the household has an infection or other hygiene concern.

So, not flushing every time isn’t inherently healthier—it’s primarily an environmental/water-saving choice.
