10 Early Warning Signs of a Stroke Everyone Should Know to Take Prompt Action

Absolutely. The key with stroke is not waiting for all the signs to appear. A stroke can cause permanent brain injury within minutes, so recognizing symptoms and getting emergency care quickly is critical.

10 early warning signs of a stroke

  1. Sudden weakness or numbness — especially on one side of the face, arm, or leg.

  2. Sudden facial drooping — one side of the face may feel numb or the smile may become uneven.

  3. Sudden trouble speaking — slurred speech, difficulty finding words, or inability to understand speech.

  4. Sudden confusion — difficulty understanding what is happening or following a conversation.

  5. Sudden vision problems — blurred, double, or lost vision in one or both eyes.

  6. Sudden severe headache — particularly a sudden, unusual headache with no obvious cause.

  7. Sudden dizziness or loss of balance — especially when accompanied by other neurological symptoms.

  8. Sudden difficulty walking — stumbling, weakness, or inability to coordinate movements.

  9. Sudden difficulty swallowing — sometimes accompanied by facial or tongue weakness.

  10. Sudden loss of coordination — difficulty controlling an arm, hand, or other movements.

Remember FAST

F — Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side droop?
A — Arms: Ask them to raise both arms. Does one drift downward?
S — Speech: Ask them to repeat a simple sentence. Is their speech strange or slurred?
T — Time: Call emergency medical services immediately.

Even if the symptoms disappear after a few minutes, they may indicate a transient ischemic attack (TIA), sometimes called a “mini-stroke.” A TIA still requires urgent medical evaluation because it can precede a major stroke.

Don’t drive the person yourself if emergency medical services are available. Note the time the symptoms began (or the last time the person was known to be normal), because this can affect treatment decisions.

If someone is experiencing these symptoms right now, treat it as an emergency and seek emergency medical care immediately.
