Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

The headline is partly misleading. Showering every day after 65 is not inherently harmful. The bigger issue is that aging skin tends to become thinner and drier, so long, hot showers and harsh soaps can cause irritation and dryness.

What older adults should consider

  • Use lukewarm rather than very hot water.
  • Keep showers relatively short, especially if dry skin is a problem.
  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, mainly on areas that need it.
  • Moisturize soon after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp.
  • If you feel dizzy in the shower, use safety measures such as a shower seat and grab bars and discuss recurring dizziness with a clinician.
  • Shower frequency can be adjusted based on activity, sweating, skin condition, and personal preference. There is no universal rule that people over 65 should stop showering daily.

So the more accurate message is: “After 65, daily showers aren’t necessarily harmful—but hot water, harsh soaps, and prolonged bathing can be tough on aging skin.”
