Taking a spoonful of honey before bed is a popular home remedy, but its effects are more modest than social-media posts often suggest.
- For cough: Honey can soothe the throat and may reduce nighttime coughing, particularly during a cold.
- For sleep: There isn’t strong evidence that a spoonful of honey reliably improves sleep in healthy adults.
- For blood sugar: Honey is still a source of sugar and carbohydrates, so it isn’t a good “blood-sugar balancing” remedy.
- For reflux: Honey isn’t a proven treatment for acid reflux, and eating anything shortly before lying down can worsen symptoms for some people.
- Dental health: Honey contains free sugars, so regularly eating it before bed without brushing afterward can increase the risk of tooth decay.
For most healthy adults, a small amount of honey is generally fine, but it isn’t a detox, fat-burning, or miracle sleep remedy. Never give honey to a child under 1 year old because of the risk of infant botulism.
