Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

Why Daily Showers After 65 May Sometimes Do More Harm Than Good đźšż

Getting older can make skin thinner, drier, and more sensitive, but that doesn’t mean people over 65 should stop showering every day. For many people, daily bathing is perfectly safe. The bigger issue is how you bathe.

7 things that can cause problems

  1. Very hot water
Hot showers can strip the skin’s natural oils and worsen dryness and itching.
  2. Long showers
Spending a long time in hot water can further weaken the skin barrier.
  3. Harsh soaps
Strongly fragranced or heavily cleansing products can irritate already-dry skin.
  4. Scrubbing too vigorously
Rough washcloths and aggressive exfoliation can damage fragile skin.
  5. Skipping moisturizer
Applying a fragrance-free moisturizer shortly after bathing helps retain moisture.
  6. Ignoring fall risks
Wet floors and getting in or out of a shower can be hazardous. Nonslip surfaces, grab bars, and a shower chair can improve safety when needed.
  7. Bathing when feeling dizzy or weak
Hot water can sometimes make lightheadedness worse. If you frequently feel dizzy, discuss it with a healthcare professional.

A skin-friendly routine

Use warm—not hot—water, keep showers reasonably short, wash gently, pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it, and moisturize afterward.

Bottom line: There’s no universal rule that people over 65 shouldn’t shower daily. If daily bathing doesn’t irritate your skin and you’re able to do it safely, there’s generally no reason to stop.
