Have you ever walked into a bathroom and noticed the toilet paper hanging over the roll instead of underneath it?

It seems like a tiny detail—but people have surprisingly strong opinions about it! 😂

🧻 The classic “over” position

With the paper hanging over the top of the roll, the loose sheet sits toward the front.

This is generally considered the more convenient position because:

✅ It’s easier to see and grab the loose end.
✅ You don’t have to reach behind the roll.
✅ It’s easier to tear off a sheet with one hand.
✅ The loose end is less likely to brush against the wall.

There’s even an interesting historical clue: the original patent for perforated toilet paper rolls from the late 19th century illustrates the paper coming over the top of the roll.

🤔 But is “under” actually wrong?

Not really.

Hanging the roll under can make sense if you prefer the appearance or want to make it harder for young children or pets to unroll the entire roll.

So while “over” has a strong practical and historical case, there’s no universal rule that says your bathroom must follow one direction.
