Which Way Is the Correct Way to Hang Toilet Paper? (The Answer Might Surprise You)

🧻 Which Way Should Toilet Paper Hang?

If you’ve ever debated whether toilet paper should hang over the top or behind the roll, you’re not alone.

The classic “correct” way: Over

The roll hangs so the loose sheet comes over the top and toward you.

Why many people prefer it:

Easier to grab and tear
You can see the loose edge immediately.
It generally keeps the paper farther from the wall.
It’s more convenient for people with limited reach or dexterity.

There’s also a historical curiosity: an 1891 patent for a toilet-paper roll holder illustrated the paper coming over the top, although that doesn’t establish a universal rule that this is the only correct orientation.

What about “under”?

Having the paper come from underneath and toward the wall is perfectly functional. Some people prefer it because it can make the roll less accessible to children or pets, and it may suit the layout of a particular bathroom.

🏆 So which one wins?

Over is the conventional choice, but there is no health or plumbing rule requiring it. The best orientation is ultimately the one that works for your household.

And if you share a bathroom with other people, there’s one solution guaranteed to prevent the argument: ask everyone which direction they prefer. 😄
