Vinegar for Whiter Whites and Softer Towels: What Actually Works?
White vinegar can be useful in laundry, but it isn’t a miracle whitener. Its most convincing use is helping remove detergent residue and hard-water mineral buildup, which can make towels feel stiff and less absorbent.
🧴 The right way to use it
For towels with buildup or a musty smell:
- Wash the towels according to their care label.
- For stubborn buildup, a vinegar soak can help dissolve mineral and detergent deposits. Clorox recommends 5% white vinegar for this purpose.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry the towels completely.
For routine washing, check your washing-machine manufacturer’s instructions first. Some manufacturers advise against putting vinegar directly into the machine because repeated exposure to acid may damage certain components.
⚪ What about making whites whiter?
Vinegar isn’t the best choice for whitening heavily stained whites. Bleach or a purpose-designed oxygen whitener is generally more effective, depending on the fabric and care label.
🚨 One rule you should never break
Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach. The combination can release toxic chlorine gas.
Also, don’t use vinegar as a replacement for laundry detergent—it doesn’t provide the same cleaning action.
