This natural and effective remedy for relieving constipation

If you’re looking for a natural way to relieve ordinary constipation, one of the better-supported options is increasing fiber gradually while drinking enough fluid.

A simple approach

  • Prunes or prune juice: Prunes contain fiber and sorbitol, which can help soften stool and stimulate bowel movements.

  • Fiber-rich foods: Fruits, vegetables, beans, oats, and whole grains can help. Increase fiber gradually to reduce bloating.

  • Fluids: Drink regularly throughout the day, especially as you increase fiber.

  • Movement: A daily walk or other regular physical activity can help bowel movements.

  • Don’t ignore the urge: Give yourself enough time to use the toilet and avoid repeatedly holding it in.

If constipation is persistent, an evidence-based option such as psyllium (ispaghula) fiber may help, but it should be taken with adequate water.

Don’t rely on “detox” remedies

Herbal teas, aggressive cleanses, and large amounts of oils aren’t necessarily safer or more effective. Some stimulant herbs can cause cramps, diarrhea, or electrolyte problems when overused.

Get medical advice if constipation is new and persistent, keeps recurring, or you have blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, or inability to pass gas. Sudden severe abdominal pain with vomiting or a swollen abdomen warrants urgent medical attention.
