This natural and effective remedy for relieving constipation

If you’re referring to a natural remedy for constipation, one of the better-supported options is prunes (dried plums) or prune juice. Prunes provide fiber and sorbitol, which can draw water into the bowel and help soften stool.

A simple approach

  • Start with a few prunes or about 4 oz (½ cup) of prune juice.
  • Drink adequate water throughout the day.
  • Gradually increase dietary fiber from fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains.
  • Stay physically active and don’t ignore the urge to have a bowel movement.

Don’t expect an “instant cure”—responses vary, and too many prunes or too much juice can cause gas, bloating or diarrhea.

If constipation is persistent, suddenly develops, or occurs with blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, or severe symptoms, seek medical advice rather than relying on a home remedy.
