The High-Sugar Alert: Recognizing the 12 Key Symptoms Your Body is Showing You.

If by “high sugar” you mean

high blood glucose (hyperglycemia), there are several symptoms your body may

show. However, symptoms alone cannot diagnose diabetes—you need a blood-glucose test.

12 common signs of high blood sugar

  1. Frequent urination — excess glucose causes the kidneys to pull more water into the urine.

  2. Increased thirst — urinating more can leave you dehydrated.

  3. Increased hunger — glucose may be abundant in the blood but not being used effectively by cells.

  4. Unexplained weight loss — particularly when blood sugar remains very high.

  5. Tiredness or weakness — cells may not be getting enough usable energy.

  6. Blurred vision — high glucose can temporarily affect the eye’s focusing system.

  7. Slow-healing cuts or wounds — particularly important when accompanied by diabetes.

  8. Frequent infections — including urinary, skin, or genital infections.

  9. Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet — more commonly associated with prolonged diabetes-related nerve damage.

  10. Dry or itchy skin — dehydration and other effects of high glucose can contribute.

  11. Headaches or difficulty concentrating — can occur when glucose is significantly elevated or fluctuating.

  12. Nausea or vomiting — especially when blood glucose is very high; this can be a warning sign of a serious complication.

When it becomes an emergency

Very high blood sugar with vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid/deep breathing, severe weakness, confusion, or unusual drowsiness can indicate diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and requires emergency medical attention.

One important point: you can have diabetes or prediabetes without noticeable symptoms. If you’re concerned about your blood sugar, an HbA1c and/or fasting blood-glucose test is much more useful than trying to identify symptoms.
