The five drinks that are most harmful to your bones, according to health experts.

There isn’t a definitive medical list of five drinks that “damage your bones.” But some beverages can contribute to poorer bone health when consumed frequently or in large amounts.

5 drinks to be cautious with

  1. Cola and other sugary soft drinks — frequent intake is associated with poorer overall diet quality, and cola consumption has been linked in observational research with lower bone mineral density in some groups. The exact cause isn’t clear.

  2. Heavy alcohol consumption — excessive alcohol can interfere with bone formation and calcium balance and increases the risk of falls and fractures.

  3. Energy drinks — many contain substantial caffeine and added sugar. They can displace nutritious beverages such as milk and water, particularly when consumed frequently.

  4. Excessive caffeinated drinks — very high caffeine intake may modestly reduce calcium absorption. Moderate caffeine intake is generally not considered harmful to bones when calcium intake is adequate.

  5. Sugar-sweetened fruit drinks — frequent consumption adds substantial sugar without providing the calcium, protein, or other nutrients important for maintaining bone health.

What matters more

Rather than simply avoiding particular drinks, focus on getting enough calcium, vitamin D, protein, and regular weight-bearing exercise, while keeping alcohol and sugary beverages limited.

And one common myth: milk isn’t automatically “good for bones” just because it’s milk—overall calcium and vitamin D intake, diet, exercise, age, medications, and other health factors all matter.

If you’re concerned about osteoporosis, especially after age 50 or after a fracture, a healthcare professional can assess your individual risk and determine whether a bone-density test is appropriate.
