The five drinks that are most harmful to your bones, according to health experts.

5 drinks that may be bad for bone health

There isn’t a scientifically established list of five drinks that “harm your bones” in everyone. Bone health depends on your overall diet, calcium and vitamin D status, physical activity, age, medications, and other factors.

However, these beverages are worth limiting:

  1. Excessive alcohol 🍺
Heavy alcohol consumption can interfere with bone formation and increase the risk of falls and fractures. Moderate or occasional drinking isn’t equivalent to heavy use.

  2. Sugary soft drinks 🥤
Frequent consumption can displace nutritious drinks and foods from the diet. Some observational studies have found associations between cola consumption and lower bone density, but this doesn’t prove that cola directly causes osteoporosis.

  3. Energy drinks
Large amounts of caffeine, sugar, and other stimulants can be problematic when these drinks replace calcium-rich beverages or contribute to excessive caffeine intake.

  4. Very high-caffeine beverages
Caffeine can modestly increase calcium loss in urine. For most people, moderate caffeine intake is not considered a major threat to bone health, particularly when calcium intake is adequate.

  5. Highly sugary drinks in general 🧃
Sweetened teas, fruit drinks, and other sugar-heavy beverages provide calories without much calcium or other bone-supporting nutrition. Making them a major part of your daily diet isn’t ideal.

What should you drink instead?

Water, milk or fortified alternatives, and unsweetened beverages can make it easier to maintain a bone-friendly diet. Adequate calcium, vitamin D, protein, and weight-bearing exercise are much more important than avoiding one particular beverage.

If you’re concerned about osteoporosis—especially after age 65 or after a fracture from a minor fall—talk with a healthcare professional about whether you need a bone-density (DEXA) scan or other assessment.
