The five drinks that are most harmful to your bones, according to health experts.

5 drinks that can be bad for bone health

There isn’t a scientifically established list of exactly five drinks that “harm your bones.” The bigger issue is regular consumption of drinks that displace nutritious foods, provide excessive sugar, or contribute to high alcohol intake.

  1. Heavy alcohol consumption 🍺
Excessive alcohol can interfere with bone formation and increase the risk of falls and fractures. Limiting alcohol is important for bone health.

  2. Sugary soft drinks 🥤
Regular consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages can contribute to poor overall diet quality and excess calorie intake. Some observational studies have found associations between high soft-drink consumption and lower bone density, but this doesn’t prove that soda directly “dissolves” bones.

  3. Energy drinks ⚡
Many contain substantial caffeine and added sugar. The concern is particularly relevant when they replace calcium-rich drinks or contribute to excessive caffeine intake.

  4. Excessive caffeinated drinks ☕
Very high caffeine intake may modestly interfere with calcium balance. Normal amounts of coffee or tea can generally fit into a healthy diet, particularly when calcium intake is adequate.

  5. Very sugary fruit drinks/juice drinks 🧃
These can provide a lot of sugar with relatively little fiber and may displace more nutritious foods. Whole fruit is generally a better choice.

What actually protects your bones?

Focus on adequate calcium and vitamin D, sufficient protein, regular weight-bearing and resistance exercise, not smoking, and limiting excessive alcohol.

You don’t need to eliminate coffee or an occasional soda to protect your bones. Overall dietary pattern and lifestyle matter much more than one beverage.
