The Best Vitamin for Your Legs: What Dead Feet and Heavy Calves Are Missing

“The Best Vitamin for Your Legs: What Dead Feet and Heavy Calves Are Missing”

This headline is misleading. There isn’t one vitamin that everyone with “dead feet” or heavy calves is missing.

🧠 Vitamin B12 is one possibility

A B12 deficiency can cause weakness, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, and balance or walking problems. Importantly, neurological symptoms can occur even when someone doesn’t have anemia.

But numb or weak feet can also result from diabetes-related neuropathy, thyroid or kidney problems, nerve compression, circulation problems, and other conditions.

⚠️ Don’t assume it’s a vitamin deficiency

If your feet feel numb, burning, unusually cold, weak, or “dead,” particularly if the symptoms persist or are getting worse, it’s better to find the cause than to start high-dose supplements. A clinician may check things such as blood glucose, vitamin B12, thyroid and kidney function, depending on your symptoms.

One important caution: too much vitamin B6 can itself cause nerve damage, so taking a “nerve vitamin” containing large amounts of B6 isn’t necessarily harmless.

🦵 What about heavy calves?

A feeling of heaviness isn’t specific to a vitamin deficiency. It can occur with muscle fatigue, venous problems, nerve disorders, medication effects, or other conditions. New swelling, especially in one leg, or swelling accompanied by pain, warmth or redness needs prompt medical assessment.
