The 10 Metoprolol Side Effects Your Doctor is PRAYING You Don’t Discover

That headline is sensationalized. Metoprolol is a widely used beta-blocker, and many people take it safely. But it can cause side effects, and some deserve prompt medical attention.

10 metoprolol side effects to know

  1. Tiredness or unusual fatigue — one of the more common effects.
  2. Dizziness or lightheadedness — especially if blood pressure becomes too low.
  3. Slow heartbeat (bradycardia) — metoprolol intentionally slows the heart, but an excessively slow rate can be a problem.
  4. Low blood pressure — which can cause weakness, dizziness, or fainting.
  5. Shortness of breath or wheezing — particularly important for people with asthma or other airway disease.
  6. Depressed mood — depression has been reported with metoprolol.
  7. Sleep disturbances or nightmares — insomnia and nightmares have been reported.
  8. Diarrhea or other digestive symptoms — diarrhea is among the reported adverse effects.
  9. Cold hands and feet — reduced circulation to the extremities can occur.
  10. Swelling or worsening heart-failure symptoms — shortness of breath, swelling, or rapid weight gain can require medical assessment.

Two things you should NOT do

Don’t stop metoprolol abruptly. Sudden withdrawal can worsen angina and, in some circumstances, increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events. Dose reduction should generally be supervised by a clinician.

Also, tell your doctor or pharmacist about your other medicines. Drugs such as verapamil, diltiazem, clonidine, and certain CYP2D6 inhibitors can increase the risk of excessive slowing of the heart or increased metoprolol levels.

Seek urgent medical attention for severe difficulty breathing, fainting, severe chest pain, or symptoms suggesting a dangerously slow heartbeat.
