Taking A Spoonful Of Honey Before Sleeping: How Does It Work?

Taking a spoonful of honey before bed is generally safe for most adults, but many online claims about it “healing the body overnight” or dramatically improving sleep aren’t well supported.

🍯 What might it do?

  • Soothe a cough or irritated throat: Honey has evidence for reducing nighttime coughing, particularly during upper-respiratory infections.
  • Provide a small amount of carbohydrate: One tablespoon contains roughly 17 g of sugar, so it isn’t a low-sugar food.
  • Sleep: Some people find a small amount comforting, but there isn’t strong evidence that a spoonful of honey reliably treats insomnia.
  • Reflux: Honey is sometimes promoted as a reflux remedy, but evidence is limited and it can potentially worsen symptoms in some people.

⚠️ Who should be careful?

  • Diabetes: Honey raises blood glucose and should be counted as part of your carbohydrate intake.
  • Weight management: A tablespoon adds roughly 60 calories.
  • Children under 1 year: Never give honey because of the risk of infant botulism.

If you’re taking honey specifically to sleep better, stop nighttime coughing, or relieve constipation, tell me which goal you have and I can explain the most evidence-based way to use it.
