👓 Scratches on Glasses: Don’t Fall for the “Instant Fix”
Unfortunately, there is no household ingredient that can safely make genuine scratches disappear instantly. Viral tips involving toothpaste, baking soda, vinegar, or other abrasives can actually make prescription lenses worse—especially if they have an anti-reflective or other protective coating.
What you can safely do
Rinse the lenses with lukewarm water to remove dust and grit.
Clean with a small amount of mild dish soap or a lens cleaner approved for your lenses.
Dry gently with a clean microfiber cloth.
Keep your glasses in a protective case when not wearing them.
🚫 Avoid DIY polishing
Don’t use toothpaste, baking soda, glass cleaner, acetone, or abrasive powders to “buff out” scratches. They may remove or damage the lens coating and can create optical distortion.
If a scratch is affecting your vision or causing distracting glare, an optician can inspect the lenses. Deeply scratched lenses generally need to be replaced rather than repaired.
Bottom line: A cleaner lens can look dramatically clearer, but a real scratch cannot safely be erased at home in seconds.
