Pain on the Left Side of the Body: What Could It Mean?

Left-sided pain can come from something as simple as a muscle strain, but the location and accompanying symptoms matter. Pain on the left side isn’t automatically a sign of a heart problem.

Possible causes

  • Chest or upper-left pain: muscle strain, acid reflux, lung problems, angina, or a heart attack can all cause discomfort there.
  • Left arm/shoulder: muscle or joint problems are common, but pain occurring with chest discomfort or breathlessness can be cardiac.
  • Left upper abdomen or under the ribs: stomach or intestinal problems can cause pain; the spleen is also located behind the left ribs. A spleen injury after a blow to the abdomen requires urgent attention.
  • Left flank or back: muscle problems, kidney stones, or urinary/kidney conditions are possibilities.
  • Lower-left abdomen: constipation, gas, diverticular disease, and other intestinal or urinary conditions can cause pain.
  • Left leg: muscle injury, nerve irritation, joint problems, or circulation problems are possible.

🚨 When left-sided pain is an emergency

Don’t wait to see whether it goes away if the pain is in the chest or upper body and occurs with pressure/tightness, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, lightheadedness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, neck, back, or stomach. These can be heart-attack symptoms.

Sudden severe pain after an injury, particularly pain behind the left ribs accompanied by dizziness or a rapid heartbeat, can indicate a ruptured spleen and requires emergency care.
