š“ If You Always Sleep on Your Right Side, Should You Be Concerned?
You don’t automatically need to change your sleeping position just because you prefer your right side. For most healthy adults, sleeping on either side is perfectly reasonable.
What right-side sleeping may mean
- Heartburn/reflux: Right-side sleeping can worsen acid reflux for some people. If you have nighttime heartburn, try your left side and consider raising the head of the bed.
- Shoulder or hip discomfort: Staying on one side for many hours can put pressure on that shoulder or hip. A pillow between your knees can improve alignment and comfort.
- Snoring or sleep apnea: Side sleeping is often preferable to sleeping flat on your back because it can help keep the airway more open.
- Pregnancy: Side sleeping is generally encouraged later in pregnancy, with the most comfortable side varying by person. A clinician can provide individualized advice.
ā¤ļø What about the heart?
You may see claims that sleeping on the right side is dangerous for your heart or that everyone should sleep on the left. That’s not true for most people. Your heart doesn’t require a particular sleeping position.
If you regularly wake with chest pain, severe shortness of breath, choking/gasping, or a racing or irregular heartbeat, that’s more important than which side you sleep on and should be medically evaluated.
Bottom line: If you sleep comfortably on your right side and wake feeling well, there’s generally no reason to change simply because of your sleeping position.
