🌿 “Never Step on This Weed”—What Could the ‘Gold Mine’ Be?
That headline is usually clickbait. A weed growing in your garden isn’t automatically valuable or medicinal, and some weeds can actually be poisonous or irritating.
One plant commonly described online as a “valuable weed” is purslane (Portulaca oleracea). It’s sometimes mistaken for an unwanted weed, but the young leaves and stems are edible and provide nutrients such as fiber, vitamin C, and minerals. It also contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid.
However, don’t eat an unidentified garden weed. Plants can look remarkably similar, and gardens may contain pesticides, herbicides, animal waste, or other contaminants.
If you send me a photo of the weed, I can help identify the plant and tell you whether it’s edible, useful, invasive, or potentially toxic.
