Never Buy Frozen Shrimp if You See This Red Flag

Never Buy Frozen Shrimp if You See These Red Flags

Frozen shrimp can be an excellent choice, but the package itself can tell you a lot about how the shrimp was handled. The biggest red flag is heavy frost or large ice crystals inside the package. FDA guidance says this can indicate prolonged storage or that the seafood may have thawed and been refrozen.

1. ❄️ Large ice crystals or heavy frost

A light protective glaze of ice can be normal. But if the shrimp are buried in lots of frost or large crystals, choose another package. Temperature fluctuations can hurt quality and may indicate poor storage.

2. 📦 Torn, open, or badly crushed packaging

Don’t buy frozen shrimp if the bag is open, torn, leaking, or severely damaged, particularly around the seams.

3. 🧊 Shrimp aren’t completely frozen

The shrimp should be hard and solidly frozen. If the contents are soft, bendable, or partly thawed, select a different package.

4. 🦐 Excessive discoloration or drying

White, grayish, dark, or leathery areas can indicate freezer burn or deterioration in quality. Freezer burn itself doesn’t necessarily make food unsafe, but extensive freezer burn can make shrimp unpleasant to eat.

5. 💧 A lot of liquid or shrimp frozen into an unusual solid mass

Excess liquid or a large frozen clump can be another clue that the shrimp experienced temperature changes. Individually quick frozen (IQF) shrimp that remain reasonably separate are often more convenient and retain better texture.

One more thing: check recalls

A package can look perfectly normal and still be subject to a food-safety recall. For example, the FDA issued recalls and safety alerts in 2025 involving certain imported frozen shrimp associated with possible cesium-137 contamination. That was a specific incident—not a reason to avoid frozen shrimp generally—but it illustrates why checking current recalls can matter.
