🌿 Natural and Powerful Homemade Weed Control
If you want a simple homemade weed killer, vinegar can work well on young, actively growing weeds, but it’s important to use it carefully. Household vinegar isn’t a reliable way to permanently kill established perennial weeds because it may only burn the leaves while the roots survive.
Simple vinegar weed spray
You’ll need:
- 1 liter (about 4ÂĽ cups) white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap
How to use it:
- Mix the vinegar and soap in a spray bottle.
- Spray directly onto the leaves of the weeds on a dry, sunny day.
- Avoid spraying desirable plants—the mixture can damage or kill them too.
- Give it several hours without rain so the foliage can dry and absorb the treatment.
- Remove the dead vegetation after it has dried.
For a longer-lasting solution
For weeds growing through cracks in driveways or paths, physically removing the roots and then covering the area with mulch, landscape fabric, or another appropriate barrier is often more effective than repeatedly spraying.
For garden beds, 2–4 inches of organic mulch can suppress many weeds while retaining soil moisture.
⚠️ What to avoid
Don’t combine vinegar with bleach, ammonia, or other household chemicals. Also avoid using salt as a routine weed killer: salt can accumulate in soil and damage desirable plants, making the area difficult to grow in afterward.
Bottom line: Vinegar is best thought of as a foliar weed-burner, not a magic permanent weed killer. For persistent weeds, removing the roots and preventing new growth usually works better.
