Lou Gehrig’s syndrome: Here are the first symptoms of this disease

“Lou Gehrig’s disease” is another name for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive disease affecting nerve cells that control voluntary muscles.

Early symptoms of ALS

The first symptoms can be subtle and vary considerably from person to person. Common early signs include:

  • Muscle weakness, often beginning in one hand, arm, leg, or foot.

  • Dropping objects or difficulty with buttons, writing, opening jars, or other fine hand movements.

  • Tripping or stumbling, sometimes because of weakness in a foot or leg.

  • Muscle twitching (fasciculations), particularly in the arms, legs, shoulders, or tongue.

  • Muscle cramps or stiffness.

  • Slurred speech or difficulty speaking clearly when the muscles involved in speech are affected first.

  • Difficulty swallowing or occasionally excessive saliva.

  • Muscle wasting (atrophy) that becomes noticeable over time.

ALS usually causes progressively worsening weakness. Sensation—such as the ability to feel touch, temperature, or pain—is generally preserved, and bladder/bowel function and eye movements are often relatively spared, particularly early in the disease.

Important: these symptoms don’t automatically mean ALS

Many much more common conditions can cause muscle twitching, cramps, weakness, numbness, or difficulty walking—including nerve compression, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, medication effects, and other neurological disorders. Muscle twitching by itself, especially without progressive weakness or muscle wasting, is not enough to diagnose ALS.

Diagnosis requires a neurological examination and often tests such as EMG/nerve-conduction studies, MRI, and blood tests, depending on the situation.

If you tell me which symptoms you are experiencing, how long they’ve been present, and whether they are getting progressively worse, I can explain what they may indicate and which features are more or less typical of ALS.
