If Your Hands “Fall Asleep” Often, Here’s What It Could Mean
That pins-and-needles feeling in your hands can be uncomfortable—and sometimes it deserves attention. But hand numbness does not automatically mean you have cancer.
There are many more common explanations.
1. You Slept on Your Arm
Pressure on a nerve while sleeping can temporarily cause numbness or tingling. It usually improves after you change position.
2. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Compression of the median nerve at the wrist can cause numbness or tingling, particularly in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger.
3. A Pinched Nerve
Problems in the neck or elsewhere along a nerve pathway can cause symptoms that travel into the arm or hand.
4. Diabetes
Long-term high blood sugar can damage nerves and cause numbness or tingling in the hands and feet.
5. Vitamin B12 Deficiency
A significant B12 deficiency can affect nerves and cause numbness, tingling, or weakness.
6. Certain Medications or Alcohol
Some medications and long-term heavy alcohol use can contribute to nerve problems.
7. Circulation or Other Nerve Problems
Various medical conditions can affect blood flow or nerve function and produce similar sensations.
When Is It an Emergency?
🚨 Sudden numbness or weakness in one arm, especially when accompanied by facial drooping, speech difficulty, confusion, vision problems, severe dizziness, or difficulty walking, can be a sign of a stroke. Seek emergency medical help immediately.
