If you mean “swollen legs can be a sign of cancer,” that is possible, but swollen legs are much more commonly caused by other conditions.

Common causes of swollen legs

  • Fluid retention (edema) from heart, kidney, or liver problems

  • Chronic venous insufficiency, where blood doesn’t return efficiently from the legs

  • Certain medications, including some blood-pressure medicines

  • A blood clot (DVT) — especially when swelling is sudden and mainly affects one leg

  • Prolonged sitting or standing

  • Lymphatic problems

  • Less commonly, cancer or cancer treatment can cause swelling, particularly if a tumor or lymph-node changes obstruct lymphatic or venous drainage.

When swelling needs urgent attention

Get urgent medical care if one leg suddenly becomes swollen, painful, warm, or red, particularly if you also develop shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing blood, or fainting. A blood clot can sometimes travel to the lungs and become life-threatening.

If leg swelling is persistent, progressively worsening, or unexplained, arrange a medical evaluation rather than assuming it is cancer. The cause can often be identified with an examination and, when appropriate, blood tests or ultrasound.
