How to Get Rid of Milia: Those Annoying Fat Cysts

How to get rid of milia safely

Milia aren’t fat cysts. They’re tiny, firm, white or yellowish cysts filled with keratin, a protein found in skin, and they’re especially common around the eyes and cheeks. They’re usually harmless and often disappear on their own.

What can help

  • Don’t squeeze or pop them. Unlike a typical pimple, milia have a hard keratin-filled structure, so squeezing can cause scarring or infection.

  • Use gentle skincare. A mild cleanser and non-comedogenic moisturizer are usually sufficient.

  • Consider a topical retinoid. Products containing retinoids can sometimes help prevent and treat milia, but they can irritate sensitive skin. Ask a dermatologist or pharmacist which option is appropriate for you.

  • Professional removal is the quickest option. A dermatologist can carefully open and extract the cyst using sterile equipment. This is particularly appropriate for persistent milia around the eyes.

Avoid DIY “remedies”

Scrubbing aggressively, poking milia with needles, or applying acids, baking soda, toothpaste, or other harsh substances can burn or scar the skin, especially around the eyes.

When to see a dermatologist

Get the bumps checked if they’re new, rapidly changing, painful, inflamed, bleeding, or you’re not sure they’re actually milia. Several other skin conditions can look similar.

If you tell me where the milia are (under the eyes, cheeks, nose, etc.) and how long you’ve had them, I can suggest the safest approach.
