How to remove scratches from glasses and restore their new and shiny appearance: a simple recipe to follow

How to Make Scratched Glasses Look Clearer and Shiny Again

Got cloudy or scratched-looking glasses? Before reaching for a DIY “scratch remover,” there’s one important thing to know:

Most eyeglass lenses cannot be safely restored by polishing at home. Abrasive products such as toothpaste, baking soda, or household polishing compounds can remove or damage protective coatings and may make the lenses look even worse.

✨ Try this safe cleaning method first:

1. Rinse the lenses with lukewarm water.
This helps remove dust and tiny particles that could scratch the surface while wiping.

2. Use a small drop of mild dish soap. 🫧
Gently clean both sides of the lenses with your fingertips. Avoid soaps containing lotions or harsh additives.

3. Rinse thoroughly.

4. Dry with a clean microfiber lens cloth.
Don’t use paper towels, tissues, clothing, or rough fabrics, which can leave particles behind or damage coatings over time.

🔍 What if the scratches are still there?

If they’re genuine scratches, cleaning won’t remove them. For expensive lenses or severe scratches, an optician can tell you whether the lenses can be replaced or whether another solution is appropriate.

⚠️ Avoid DIY polishing hacks. Trying to “sand away” a scratch can distort the lens surface, affect your vision, and damage anti-reflective or other coatings.
