Doctors Reveal What Drinking Coffee Every Morning Really Does

The headline “coffee every morning causes…” makes it sound as though coffee is inherently harmful. The evidence is much more nuanced.

For most healthy adults, moderate coffee consumption is generally considered safe, and research has actually associated moderate coffee intake with several favorable health outcomes. The FDA says up to about 400 mg of caffeine per day—roughly 2–3 12-ounce cups of coffee—is not generally associated with negative effects for most adults, although sensitivity varies considerably.

What can coffee cause?

Too much caffeine can lead to:

  • ❤️ Faster heartbeat or palpitations
  • 😰 Anxiety, nervousness, or jitters
  • 😴 Difficulty sleeping
  • 🤢 Upset stomach or nausea
  • 🤕 Headaches
  • 📈 Temporary increases in blood pressure

If you’re sensitive to caffeine, even a morning cup may produce noticeable symptoms.

But coffee isn’t simply “bad”

Large observational studies and meta-analyses have found that moderate coffee consumption is not associated with increased cardiovascular mortality and has sometimes been associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease and overall mortality. However, these studies largely show associations rather than proving that coffee itself causes those benefits.

☕ What about your morning cup?

If you enjoy coffee and it doesn’t cause palpitations, anxiety, stomach problems, or sleep disruption, there’s generally no reason for most adults to give it up solely because of their age or because it’s consumed in the morning.
