You can’t completely prevent or erase wrinkles with daily habits, but you can reduce premature skin aging and make existing wrinkles less noticeable.
Daily habits that help
-
Use sunscreen every day. A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ is one of the most effective habits for preventing photoaging. Reapply when outdoors, especially after sweating or swimming.
-
Moisturize regularly. A moisturizer helps the skin retain water, temporarily making fine lines look less prominent.
-
Consider a retinoid at night. Retinol/retinoids have some of the strongest evidence for improving fine lines and photoaging. Start slowly because irritation is common.
-
Don’t smoke. Smoking accelerates collagen breakdown and is associated with more pronounced wrinkles.
-
Eat a balanced diet. Emphasize vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and adequate protein rather than relying on “anti-aging” supplements.
-
Sleep adequately. Consistently poor sleep can negatively affect skin appearance.
-
Avoid tanning. UV exposure is a major driver of premature skin aging; tanning beds are particularly harmful.
-
Be gentle with your skin. Avoid harsh scrubbing and excessive washing, and use a gentle cleanser.
A simple routine
Morning: gentle cleanser → moisturizer → SPF 30+
Night: gentle cleanser → retinoid/retinol if appropriate → moisturizer
Results from topical retinoids generally take weeks to months, not days.
If you’re pregnant or trying to become pregnant, ask your clinician before using topical retinoids.
