How Often You Should Really Shower: What Experts Want You to Know

How Often Should You Really Shower?

There isn’t one medically required number of showers per week for everyone. How often you should shower depends on your activity, climate, sweating, skin type, and personal circumstances.

For people with dry or sensitive skin—particularly older adults—the American Academy of Dermatology says you may not need to bathe every day. When you do shower, dermatologists recommend keeping it around 5–10 minutes, using warm rather than hot water, and moisturizing afterward.

A good routine

  • 🚿 Shower when you’re sweaty, dirty, or after significant exercise.
  • Use warm water, not very hot water.
  • Keep showers relatively short.
  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, particularly if your skin is dry.
  • You don’t necessarily need to aggressively soap every part of your body every day.
  • Pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it vigorously.
  • Apply a fragrance-free cream or ointment while your skin is still slightly damp, ideally within a few minutes of showering.

What if you shower every day?

Daily showering isn’t automatically harmful. The bigger issue is long, hot showers and harsh soaps, which can strip natural oils and worsen dry, itchy skin. This becomes more relevant with age because skin tends to become thinner and drier.
