DRY MOUTH EVERY MORNING? Don’t IGNORE What Your Body Could Be Signaling

Dry Mouth Every Morning? Here’s What Your Body Could Be Signaling

Waking up with a dry mouth occasionally is usually not alarming. Saliva production naturally decreases during sleep, and sleeping with your mouth open can make morning dryness much worse. But persistent dry mouth shouldn’t simply be dismissed as “normal aging.”

Common reasons

  1. Mouth breathing or snoring — A blocked nose, sleeping with your mouth open, or snoring can dry the mouth overnight.
  2. Sleep apnea — Morning dry mouth can occur alongside loud snoring, nighttime gasping, morning headaches, or excessive daytime sleepiness.
  3. Medications — Hundreds of medicines can cause dry mouth, including some used for high blood pressure, depression, allergies, congestion, pain, and bladder problems.
  4. Not enough fluid intake — Dehydration can contribute to dryness.
  5. Alcohol, tobacco, or lots of caffeine — These can worsen dry-mouth symptoms.
  6. Diabetes — Persistent dry mouth can occur with diabetes and other medical conditions.
  7. Sjögren’s disease and other conditions — Autoimmune disorders affecting saliva production can cause persistent dryness.

💧 What you can do

  • Keep water available and sip regularly throughout the day.
  • Try sugar-free gum or sugar-free hard candy to stimulate saliva.
  • Limit alcohol and tobacco and reduce excessive caffeine.
  • Consider a humidifier at night.
  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and maintain good dental care because inadequate saliva increases the risk of cavities, gum disease and oral infections.

🚩 When to get checked

If your mouth is consistently dry, particularly if you also have difficulty swallowing, mouth sores, recurrent oral infections, significant thirst/urination, or severe snoring and daytime sleepiness, talk with a doctor or dentist. They can review your medications and look for an underlying cause.
