Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

🛏️ How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Make Them Fresh Again

This viral tip is partly useful, but the safest method depends on the pillow filling. Always check the care label first. Some pillows are machine-washable, while others are hand-wash or dry-clean only. (Sleep Foundation)

✨ Simple washing method

For a machine-washable synthetic pillow:

  1. Remove the pillowcase and protector.
  2. Wash two pillows together to help balance the washer.
  3. Add a small amount of liquid laundry detergent.
  4. Use a gentle cycle and the warmest temperature allowed by the care label.
  5. Select an extra rinse if available. (Whirlpool)
  6. Dry according to the label. Dryer balls can help restore fluffiness.
  7. Make absolutely sure the pillow is completely dry inside before using it again. Moisture trapped inside can cause odors and other problems. (Maytag)

🤍 What about yellow stains?

Yellowing is often caused by sweat, body oils, and other buildup. For pillows whose labels permit it, an oxygen/color-safe bleach can help brighten them. ACI recommends choosing bleach according to the fabric-care instructions; oxygen bleach is gentler than chlorine bleach. (Cleaning Institute)

Don’t automatically use chlorine bleach. Down/feather pillows, in particular, should not be treated with regular chlorine bleach. (Clorox™)

🌿 For a fresh smell

Clean the pillow properly and dry it thoroughly rather than simply masking the odor with perfume or fabric spray. If the pillow remains musty after washing and complete drying, it may be time to replace it.

Bottom line: The “secret ingredient” isn’t really the important part. Correct washing + thorough drying + following the pillow’s care label is what makes the biggest difference.
