Dry Mouth Every Morning? Here’s What It Could Mean
Waking up with a dry mouth occasionally is common. But if it happens every morning, it’s worth looking for the underlying cause. Dry mouth isn’t considered a normal part of aging and, when persistent, can increase the risk of tooth decay and oral infections.

Common reasons
Mouth breathing at night: A blocked nose, sleeping with your mouth open, or other causes of nighttime mouth breathing can leave your mouth extremely dry by morning.

Dehydration: Not drinking enough fluids—or losing fluid through sweating, illness, vomiting, or diarrhea—can cause dry mouth.

Medications: Hundreds of medicines can reduce saliva production. Common examples include some antidepressants, antihistamines, blood-pressure medicines, diuretics, and bladder-control medications.

What you can do
Keep water beside your bed and take regular sips during the day.
Chew sugar-free gum or use sugar-free lozenges to stimulate saliva.
Avoid smoking and limit alcohol.
Don’t overdo caffeine if it seems to worsen your symptoms.
Use an alcohol-free mouthwash and brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
A humidifier at night may help.

Don’t stop a prescription medicine because you suspect it’s causing dry mouth. Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether the medication, dose, or timing could be contributing.
If the dryness persists for several weeks, makes eating or speaking difficult, causes mouth pain or white patches, or occurs along with frequent urination or very dry eyes, arrange a medical or dental evaluation.

Bottom line: Morning dry mouth is often caused by mouth breathing, dehydration, or medication, but persistent symptoms deserve attention because saliva protects your teeth and mouth.
