Doctors Warn: If You Often Sleep on Your Right Side…

Sleeping on your right side is not inherently dangerous, and for many people it is simply a comfortable sleeping position. However, your position can influence certain symptoms.

1. Heartburn may be worse

For people with acid reflux, sleeping on the right side can sometimes allow stomach contents to move toward the esophagus more easily. Left-side sleeping may reduce nighttime reflux symptoms for some people.

2. Shoulder or hip discomfort

Keeping the same position for hours can put pressure on the shoulder, hip, or other joints. If you wake with soreness or numbness, changing positions or improving pillow support may help.

3. Your spine still needs support

Side sleepers generally benefit from a pillow that keeps the head and neck reasonably aligned with the spine. A pillow between the knees can also reduce twisting through the hips and lower back.

4. Pregnancy is a special situation

Pregnant people may receive specific sleep-position advice as pregnancy progresses. Rather than relying on generalized social-media claims, follow guidance from your obstetric or maternity-care professional.

So, should you stop sleeping on your right side?

Not necessarily. If you sleep comfortably, wake feeling well, and don’t have symptoms that are affected by your position, there is generally no reason to force yourself to change.

If you regularly experience nighttime chest pain, significant shortness of breath, severe reflux, fainting, or other concerning symptoms, don’t assume your sleeping position is the cause—get medical advice.
