Did You Know That Drinking Water on an Empty Stomach Could Be…?
You may have seen claims that drinking water immediately after waking up can “flush toxins,” boost metabolism, or cleanse your organs.” Most of these claims are exaggerated.
But having a glass of water in the morning can still be a healthy habit.
1. 💦 It helps replace fluids
You go several hours without drinking while asleep, so water can help restore hydration.
2. 🚽 It may support regular bowel movements
Adequate fluid intake helps keep stool softer, particularly when you’re also getting enough dietary fiber.
3. 🧠 It supports normal body function
Water is important for circulation, temperature regulation, digestion, and normal kidney function.
4. ☕ It can be a useful alternative to sugary drinks
Starting the day with water instead of a sugary beverage can reduce unnecessary calorie and sugar intake.
⚠️ But you don’t need to drink a huge amount
There’s no proven benefit to forcing down several glasses or liters of water on an empty stomach. Drinking excessive amounts quickly can actually be dangerous because it can dilute blood sodium.
And if you have certain heart or kidney conditions and have been instructed to restrict fluids, follow your healthcare professional’s guidance.
