Be your own dentist! Here are some tips for removing tartar buildup at home.

Can you remove tartar at home?

You can remove plaque, but once plaque hardens into tartar (calculus), you generally can’t safely remove it yourself. Tartar is firmly attached to the teeth and usually requires professional scaling by a dentist or dental hygienist.

What you can do at home

  • 🪥 Brush twice a day for about two minutes with fluoride toothpaste.

  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes.

  • Consider an electric toothbrush if it makes thorough cleaning easier.

  • A fluoride mouthwash can provide additional protection, but it doesn’t dissolve existing tartar.

  • Limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks.

Avoid viral DIY tartar-removal tricks

Don’t scrape your teeth with knives, pins, metal tools, fingernails, or homemade abrasive mixtures. You can damage enamel, injure your gums, or cause infection.

Likewise, lemon juice, vinegar, and aggressive baking-soda treatments aren’t safe substitutes for professional cleaning.

When to see a dentist

If you already have visible hard yellow/brown deposits, bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession, loose teeth, or tooth sensitivity, arrange a dental examination and cleaning.

Bottom line: You can prevent and control plaque at home, but established tartar is best removed professionally.
