🍌 Make Bananas Last Longer With One Simple Kitchen Item
If you’re trying to keep bananas fresh longer, the “one kitchen item” is usually plastic wrap—specifically, wrapping the banana stems.
How to do it
-
Separate the bananas from the bunch.
-
Wrap a small piece of plastic wrap tightly around the top/stem of each banana.
-
Keep them at room temperature while they’re still green or yellow.
-
Once they’re fully ripe, you can refrigerate them. The peel may turn brown, but the fruit inside can remain good for longer.
Why does it work?
Bananas naturally release ethylene gas, which promotes ripening. Covering the stem can reduce the amount of ethylene escaping from that area and may slow ripening somewhat.
However, claims that stem wrapping will reliably make bananas last exactly 10 days longer are exaggerated. Ripening also depends on temperature, banana variety, maturity, and storage conditions.
Another effective option: Keep bananas away from other ethylene-producing fruits such as apples and avocados if you want to slow ripening.
